Doctors’ Memorial Hospital
Emergency Medical Services
DMH Emergency Medical services began operation on June 1, 1999. The hospital
acquired the service after the County and hospital negotiated an agreement for
the hospital to take over ambulance operations. DMH has continuously operated
the service since that time. DMH receives a monthly subsidy from the county to
help offset the cost of operations.
Our goal is to provide the latest and best pre-hospital emergency care, to each
and every patient that we have the privilege to serve.
DMH-EMS operates two Advanced Life Support Ambulances twenty-four hours a day,
seven days a week, 365 days a year. These units are completely stocked with the
latest in life saving technology. This technology includes 12 lead cardiac
monitoring, advanced medications, advanced airway procedures including rapid
sequence intubation and surgical cricothyroidotomy procedures. Each unit is
staffed with a Paramedic and an Emergency Medical Technician. These individuals
work under strict medical and trauma protocols that have been established by the
Service Medical Director.
Currently Medical Direction for the service is provided by Dr. Miles V. Nelson,
M.D. Dr.
Nelson is the local General Surgeon and has been on staff at DMH continuously
since September 1989. Dr. Nelson brings a vast amount of knowledge and
experience to our service. Dr. Nelson provides the medical oversight and
protocols for the Paramedic’s and EMT’s that practice at DMH-EMS, and is
extensively involved in the training and quality assurance programs for the
service.
DMH-EMS is the 911 provider for the entire 1042 square miles of Taylor County.
The primary mission of the service is to provide emergency pre-hospital care to
the sick and injured citizens and visitors of Taylor County. The service also
provides a secondary function in transporting inter-hospital patients. These are
patients that require specialty services that are not readily available at DMH.
We also provide limited non-emergency service to the local area.
DMH-EMS also has several area mutual aid agreements in place. These include
agreements with Lafayette County, Madison County, Jefferson County and Dixie
County. All of these services also provide mutual aid to DMH in times of
disaster or other situations that require additional support.
DMH-EMS responds to an average of 2500 calls per year, including medical,
cardiac and trauma related request for service.
