Stereotactic (Mammographically Guided)
Breast Biopsy Unit
Aquilion 64 Multi-detector Row Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner

The Stereotactic Unit is a minimally invasive breast biopsy device that offers women a diagnostically reliable alternative to an open surgical biopsy or core needle biopsy.  It requires no stitches, can be performed in less than an hour and results in less scarring than traditional open surgery.

During the procedure, a woman lies prone comfortably, while the doctor places the probe through a single incision about the size of a match head.  Stereotactic or ultrasound imaging guidance is used to accurately pinpoint the suspicious tissue.  Once inside, the probe gently vacuums, cuts and removes the suspicious tissue for further examination.  Only a small adhesive bandage is required to cover the tiny incision and patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately afterward.

With the Stereotactic Unit, doctors can biopsy a wide range of breast abnormalities, from microcalcifications, tiny deposits of calcium within the breast, to lumps on the surface of the breast, both of which may indicate cancer.  In addition, at the end of the biopsy procedure, a radiographic tissue marker can be placed directly into the biopsied area of the breast to help manage follow-up care, including future mammograms and biopsies.

Today, more options exist, including minimally invasive breast biopsies that are gentler on a women's body, require no open surgery, no stitches and can be performed in an outpatient environment.  Minimally invasive breast biopsies are rapidly replacing open surgical biopsies.  According to a consensus paper published in The Journal of the American College of Surgeons (Sept. 2001), 22 breast cancer specialists recommended that if a mammogram indicates a breast biopsy is needed, a minimally invasive breast biopsy should be performed rather than an open surgical biopsy.

PADnet + Arterial
Aquilion 64 Multi-detector Row Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner

8-12 million Americans have PAD.  Without proper treatment 30% are likely to die in five years of PAD-related heart attack or stroke. By the age of 50, nearly 40% of women and 20% of men have significant leg vein problems. An estimated 20 to 25 million Americans have varicose veins. The PADnet+venous test is a non-invasive test that can be completed in just 5-10 minutes.  Venous testing helps identify problems affecting venous circulation and determine whether medical or surgical treatment is necessary.

Aquilion 64 Multi-Detector Row
Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner
Aquilion 64 Multi-detector Row Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner
DMH, in its ongoing commitment to provide the best medical care to the   community, has installed an Aquilion® 64 multi-detector row computed tomography (CT) scanner which is the most advanced 64-detector row CT scanner available & represents the leading edge in medical technology. We are now equipped to deliver high quality high resolution exams to our patients. The new CT delivers high-speed, high-resolution imaging, which allows physicians to capture precise images of any area of the body, including the rapidly moving heart and lungs. With the fastest scanning capability in the market, the system allows important diagnostic information concerning the heart to be obtained within a single breath-hold. This multi-detector CT has dramatically improved clinicians' ability to accurately diagnose disease at an early stage. It is a powerful diagnostic tool that uses rotating X-rays to penetrate body tissues, generating multiple slice images, which can detect more than traditional radiography. The Aquilion CT systems delivers excellent image quality & provide outstanding performance & clinical productivity to meet the needs of any size hospital or clinic. The Aquilion 64 is designed to offer physicians greater diagnostic capabilities which help patients avoid more invasive medical procedures. The system delivers clinical images with multi-slice imaging technology that captures up to 64 anatomical slices in a single rotation. In addition, the system’s sensitivity and accuracy are enhanced with a process called isotropic scanning, which results in images that most accurately capture equal views and angles of internal structures. As a result, Toshiba’s multi-slice technology captures precise images of the body’s rapidly moving organs like the heart and lungs, which appear blurry when scanned by a traditional CT. Multi-slice imaging also is especially useful for examining patients who are unable to hold their breath, like trauma victims, acutely ill patients and young children, providing a less frightening experience.

Compounding Aseptic Isolator
"The Glovebox"
Aquilion 64 Multi-detector Row Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner

Doctors’ Memorial Hospital (DMH) pharmacists are going inside the box to avoid the possibility of preparing contaminated intravenous (IV) solutionsThe hospital recently obtained a $13,000 glovebox, formally known as a Compounding Aseptic Isolator, through a Florida Department of Health Rural Capital Improvement Grant.  “The glovebox is essential for the hospital to meet the new government and industry standards for the preparation of sterile products,” said Ted Sanders, director of pharmacy at DMH.  “These standards were established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) to ensure products prepared within hospitals are of the same quality as those prepared by the pharmaceutical industry.”   The guidelines set forth by USP Chapter 797 have led hospitals nationwide to invest in upgrades in new technology and equipment.  DMH considered retrofitting the pharmacy by installing a clean room, but opted for the glovebox as a more cost effective alternative, Sanders said.  The clean room would have been at least double the cost of the glovebox to install, along with being much more expensive to operate on a daily basis.  With DMH’s fairly low IV volume, the hospital felt the glovebox option was a better choice, he continued.  DMH pharmacists are now being trained in using this new technology.  “This is the only facility with an isolator between Tallahassee and Gainesville,” Sanders said.  “Our patients can be assured their IV products will be prepared by trained pharmacists working under the most modern conditions available.”
